Introduction

Character and Leadership Education is an important aspect in the VS Curriculum. Affective issues are incorporated into the curriculum of every subject, and teachers must take the responsibility to inculcate sound social and moral values in every student.

In the teaching of values, the design of the curriculum and co-curriculum involves not just the cognitive aspect but also the heart and the will. The processes of using the five domains of SEL skills can effectively engage the minds of students. While the students are given the opportunity to clarify and demonstrate the values, they should also understand the place of universal values which uphold social order.

Objectives of Character & Leadership Education

The curriculum provides students with authentic learning opportunities that help them to internalize the values taught and acquire the skills and attitudes necessary for developing sound social and moral values. Eventually, the curriculum aims to nurture our students to have a sense of responsibility towards self, family, community, nation and the world through strengthening their character from within.

Approach & Programme:

Anchoring in values, the curriculum provides students with authentic learning opportunities that help them to internalize the values taught and acquire the skills and attitudes necessary for developing sound social and moral values.

The Curriculum focus on three aspects:

Moral Education Module adopts a values-based approach. It highlights six core values, namely, Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Care, Resilience and Harmony. These values are fundamental in developing a person of good character and a responsible citizen of Singapore. The goal is to nurture our students to be a person of good character, who is caring and acts responsibly towards self, family, community, nation and the world.

Lifeskills Module helps to affirm students' potential and acknowledge their weaknesses and instil in pupils a sense of stewardship of their talents for the good of others. At the same time, lessons are developed to help students to be aware of their emotions and manage and express them appropriately; to equip pupils with self-management skills such as stress management with the purpose of developing resilience in the pupils; to develop positive work ethics and thinking dispositions in pupils who will, in due course, develop an internal motivation and locus of control.

Citizenship Module is designed to expose students to social problems so that they may be able to make informed and empathetic responses to social issues. It provides students with opportunities to identify real community needs and engage in Service-Learning projects which are deliberate and meaningful. At the end of the module, we hope to encourage students to see themselves as social innovators and problem solvers.

Assessment:

Assessment in CLE is designed to check students' understanding and to facilitate the learning of skills and knowledge taught. Students are provided with authentic learning experiences, and assessments are done through reflection blogs, activities with CLE-infused focus, Service-Learning Experience and Performance. This variety of assessment methods takes into account the different abilities and learning styles of students.
Students are assigned grades which are entered in their report book. Below is the grading system for CLE:
